As singers, it’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing all of our energy into perfecting vocal technique. We’re so busy fine-tuning our craft that we forget our voice is only part of the picture.

There’s also performance.

Without performance skills, it’s difficult to properly share your talent or communicate something with an audience through song. Or make an impact when it counts at an exam or audition.

This Performance Workshop with experienced singer, director and mentor Christine Douglas will teach a series of techniques that enable you to own the stage and express yourself in public.

You’ll learn how to:
•    Find the best energy to perform and use breathing exercises to control nerves.
•    Connect with your music and lyrics in order to communicate a message to your audience
•    Create stage presence through body language, posture and gesture
•    Unpack negative beliefs about performance and replace them with a positive mindset
•    Mentally rehearse your visualisations of a successful and enjoyable performance
•    Enter and exit a stage with poise and presence.

Who is the course for?
•    HSC or university students preparing for exams
•    Competitors preparing for an eisteddfod
•    Concert and choir performers
•    Anyone auditioning for theatre, gigs and tertiary courses

Course format:
This Performance Workshop is an opportunity for technically-skilled singers to work individually with presenter Christine Douglas on performing a specific song. While conducted in a group setting, 10 singers will work one-on-one with Christine on set music they’re preparing for an exam, audition or competition. There are also openings for observers to attend the course. Observer participants will join in on group work conducted at the beginning of the workshop and then sit back to learn from the practical advice given to full participants.

Course schedule:
12.30 – 1.30    Introduction and Group Work
1.30 – 3.00    One-on-one practical work with individual participants
3.00 – 3.30    Afternoon tea break. Tea and coffee supplied.
3.30 – 4.50    One-on-one practical work with individual participants

Performance Workshop SingingWhat participants say:
“Christine is wonderful! While I’m a naturally reserved person, she gave me the confidence to include the audience and go on the song’s journey with them. She also helped me understand the sheer energy needed to perform in an expressive way. I felt really excited to perform after the workshop.” Maja Naumoska
