We humans are creatures of habit, and convenience can be key to forming good habits. This is especially true for singing training. Regular lessons and singing practice are essential to developing your vocal skills and technique, and anything that makes this easier is a good thing. This is one reason I offer singing lessons in Sydney’s CBD. Having a central location for singers who work or live in the city, east Sydney, lower north shore or inner-city suburbs is a convenient option.
Being particular about location and facilities, I offer central Sydney singing tuition in a studio at the City of Sydney Creative Studios in Bathurst Street. The state-of-the-art complex features:
Our studio on level 5 includes a new Yamaha upright piano, with recording capabilities, music stands, microphones and other music gear also available.
Some singers are already exploring the creative potential of having everything to enhance their singing goals in one place. Singer-songwriter, Gemma Lipman appreciates the convenience and safety of our studio’s location. It’s a short light rail trip from her job at music copyright organisation, APRA AMCOS, in Haymarket, then a bus home. Working towards an EP of original songs, Gemma is considering using the Creative Studios’ professional recording facilities.
“The performance spaces are excellent and the hiring fees seem reasonable for an artist like me,” she says. “The soundproofed room we work in is terrific because we don’t hear any other rehearsals or recording studio noise.”
Working in a professional environment enhances your singing learning. And if performance is your goal, having the space to explore movement and the proper gear to hand, you can hone those skills, as Gemma finds.
“It is a good size room – intimate enough to hear yourself and large enough to practise some stage moves and craft,” she says. “There is enough room to imitate being on stage.”
I’ve noticed that when my singers hear their voice in our professional, acoustically designed room, it provides incentive to keep improving. I elaborated on this in an interview for a recent profile by Brand X, the group operating the creative complex:
“What my students utterly love when they open up their voices to sing in that room is the quality of sound that they get back, it encourages them to work harder and to work better at their craft. I mean sure, they have to have a good teacher who has fantastic ears, but I think that quality is unparalleled.”
Singer Anne Richardson agrees: “The facilities are in a league of their own – well-designed, acoustically clear, and still connected to the city through engaging views.”
A classical singer, Anne is working with me on an all-French repertoire for a solo performance next year at St Stephen’s Church in Macquarie Street. Each week, Anne shows improvement and is looking for the next skill to finesse. It has paid off, as her singing shows real quality with improved French pronunciation. She also plans recording some songs using the Studios’ facilities.
The city location suits Anne, who travels by train from Chatswood, has a coffee at the Creative Studios’ OK Cool café, and chats with Houng the owner before her lesson.
“The Studio has a welcoming, positive atmosphere right from the moment I step in the front door,” Anne says. “This helps me get ‘into the zone’ of a positive, energised mindset. Singing is a life-long passion of mine. Learning and rehearsing in this environment with my amazing teacher helps me elevate my craft. It allows me to bring clarity and focus to the work, taking a performance ambition and making it a reality. The team at the coffee shop deserve special mention – they’ve been courteous and helped me re-invigorate with their excellent beverages!”
My city studio singers also come from Darlinghurst, Erskineville, Glebe and the inner west. And the Creative Studios complex is convenient to suburbs like Bondi Junction, Paddington and Surry Hills. One singer recently described our city studio as a ‘jewel’. It will certainly add polish to your singing progress.
